Illustration created for “1th May in the Abbey” event organized by Abbazia di Propezzano, a winery based in Morro d’Oro (TE) and Orvieto, Italy.

The winery takes its name from the Monastery of Santa Maria di Propezzano and the adjacent Abbey, in which it is based: in fact, wine has been produced in the abbey’s cellars since its foundation.

The heart of the Abbey is the cloister, with a square plan and two rows of arcades supported by brick and terracotta pillars.

On the ground floor there are covered corridors, with a direct access from the monastery rooms and, in the center of the inner courtyard, there is a well with a triangular sloping roof.

In the illustration this cloister, from which the Winery’s logo also originates, becomes the decorative motif of the protagonist’s skirt, surrounded by naturalistic elements and objects that evoke the theme of picnicking and conviviality outdoors.

Framing the design, a round arch recalls the arches that encircle the courtyard on the ground floor of the abbey.
